1 Introduction

1.1 Laidlaw & Constable recognise that the people we employ and the people we work with are the most important part of our business. We acknowledge the individual distinctiveness of individuals and organisations. Laidlaw & Constable is committed to providing high quality services to all its clients and associates in access to and the provision of training and consultancy services, access to work, services and information and participation for all.

2 Purpose/Statement of Intent

2.1 The purpose of the Diversity and Equality Policy is to ensure that Diversity and Equality are implemented in all the services we provide.

3 Core Values

3.1 These core values underpin all of our work.
  • Laidlaw & Constable values the diversity of the individuals and organisations which we serve. We wish to reflect this diversity in our workforce and are working towards this.
  • We value a culture that encourages and enables our clients and our employees to make their distinctive contribution and achieve their full potential.
  • We recognise that every individual can influence the way in which Diversity and Equality is achieved. We value each individual for their own particular strengths and talents.
  • Laidlaw & Constable recognises the importance of two way communication with all our clients and employees.
  • We will work to break down barriers of discrimination, prejudice, fear or misunderstanding which can limit the ability of individuals to learn, to develop and to flourish. We will not tolerate any form of intimidation, humiliation, harassment, bullying or abuse and will ensure that each individual is treated fairly and with dignity and respect.

3.2 This policy will help Laidlaw & Constable to

  • ensure that each individual is treated fairly and equally.
  • attract and retain skilled and competent employees and associates
  • make the best use of the skills, competencies and knowledge of all those involved in the delivery of our services
  • support each individual to work towards their potential

4 Aims

4.1 Laidlaw & Constable will treat each of its clients and employees with dignity and respect and will provide services which are free from discrimination, harassment or victimisation.

4.2 We recognise our responsibility to ensure that anyone involved with the provision of goods, facilities or services does not unlawfully discriminate against someone who seeks to obtain or use those goods, facilities or services

  • by refusing or deliberately omitting to provide them with goods, facilities or services
  • by refusing or deliberately omitting to provide tem with goods, facilities or services of the same quality, in the same manner and on the same terms as would normally be provided to others in the same circumstances.

4.3 We will not tolerate acts which breach this duty and all instances of such behaviour, or alleged behaviour, will be taken seriously and, if appropriate, will be fully investigated under Laidlaw & Constable’s disciplinary procedure.

5 Quality

5.1 Laidlaw & Constable will provide services that:

  • meet the agreed needs of our clients
  • are delivered consistently to comply with clearly stated standards of performance
  • are delivered by effective, well trained and motivated staff or associates
  • are supported by effective management systems
  • are clearly explained to clients in an appropriate format
  • are continuously reviewed and monitored to ensure that they meet agreed client needs.

6 Responsibilities

6.1 The Directors are responsible for:

  • promoting Diversity and Equality
  • developing and supporting the implementation of the Diversity and Equality policy
  • ensuring that adequate resources are made available to ensure that Laidlaw & Constable meets its legal responsibilities

6.2 Head Office Staff are responsible for:

  • ensuring that other company policies are consistent with the Diversity and Equality policy
  • ensuring that recruitment and selection activity does not allow discrimination except for substantive reasons pertinent to the requirements of the job
  • monitoring and analysing the impact of the Diversity and Equality policy.
  • ensuring that complaints are investigated and dealt with effectively.

6.3 Trainers, Consultants and Associates are responsible for:

  • ensuring that the policy is communicated to all learners and clients
  • ensuring that all services delivered reflect the policy
  • ensuring that all learning materials and activities are free from discrimination and do not cause any individual to feel bullied, harassed or victimised.
  • ensuring that all their conduct is consistent with the core values of Laidlaw & Constable.

7 Monitoring

7.1 Laidlaw & Constable recognise that genuine equality of opportunity can only be assessed by monitoring what happens in each area of activity and using this information to modify and inform our future actions, plans, policies procedures and practices.

  • We will collect qualitative and quantitative data to measure satisfaction and progress.
  • This policy will be regularly monitored and formally reviewed not less than annually.

8 Conclusion

8.1 The reward for commitment to Diversity and Equality include a more responsive and better quality service and support to all our clients and employees. We will communicate and celebrate the progress we make towards Diversity and Equality in learning and developing individuals and organisations.
